halF way through!

So, incredibly, we’re halF way through Jamune already!

As you know, at the centre of the whole halF unusuaL project is a fascination with sound — and the question of under what conditions we might allow it to manifest itself as music.

Today’s Jamune offering — number 16 — takes a really simple idea: exploring how sound lives and breathes inside a video editor.

Our eyes and ears are governed by very different mechanisms, physically and mentally. But under certain circumstances, each can be encouraged to understand something of the world of its sibling sense organ.

Over the last few years, I’ve become increasingly intrigued by editing moving images — and, perhaps unsurprisingly, especially images with sound ‘welded’ to them. There’s enormous scope for interrogating this relationship, and the video editor can begin to function as something of a DAW — creating curious little audio-visual musics through timing, repetition, interruption and juxtaposition.

Now, you may not consider Jamune 16 to be music at all — and that’s totally fine.

But the way the sound rubs against the image, the way the imperfect recording somehow becomes part of the character, and the way edits and repetitions subtly affect us … all of this feels like food for thought. Or perhaps more accurately, food for experience.

These unusuaL ponderings are the sorts of things that bubble up halfway through a project.

What did you make of episode 16 — or any of the Jamune sketches so far?

On a slightly different, but related note: because Jamune has revolved around a sketch approach — exploring possibilities with a view to expanding fruitful directions later — I have to admit to hankering after something a little more complete …
